Joe Barton Yells at a Constituent to “Shut Up”

Town hall meetings expose Texas Republican’s disdain for voters
Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX6, Ennis) usually comes across as smug but relatively calm.  Not on Saturday, however.  Barton lost it when he yelled at a constituent to “Shut Up.”

Barton blew his stack at a town hall meeting in the small town of Frost, Texas while being asked why he opposes legislation to address violence against women.  Barton tried to dodge the substance of the question by saying it was a state and not a federal issue.  When some of those attending didn’t accept the answer and spoke out, Barton pointed his finger at one of them and yelled at them to “Shut Up.”

Look at the video and read the transcript below:
TRANSCRIPT:

Constituent: …now given your voting record opposing legislation protecting women from violence. Will you make a commitment to us today…make a promise that you will reach out to Congresswoman Jackie Speier and work with her to see this bill successfully though Congress?

Barton: Let me comment on a number of things there. On the first bill that I voted against—that’s a true statement. And I voted against it because I think that’s a state issue, not a federal issue (inaudible)...

Audience: It’s violence against women, that’s a national issue. That is an issue that impacts everyone everywhere, not only in this country but everywhere.

Audience: (inaduable)…the whole state of Texas…you represent Texas first.

Barton: You sir shut up…
