Munisteri seems shaken, not stirred

Lately, Texas Republicans are coming across as a little nervous. Yesterday, Texas Republican Chairman Steve Munisteri attempted some tongue-in-cheek humor in response to the Battleground Texas plans to join with other Texas Democratic efforts aimed at ending failed one party Republican control of our state. Munisteri sounded defensive and consistently off the mark. He may want to move his tongue aside to make some room for his foot.
Munisteri Remark:

If politics doesn’t work out, you might want to visit Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth or San Antonio – 5 of the nation’s 10 best cities for good jobs.

LSP Response:

All five of these Texas cities are great places to live and work. Steve forgot to mention that President Obama carried all five cities in 2008 and in 2012 and that four of the five cities currently are served by Democratic mayors (Source: Texas Secretary of State, precinct election returns).

Munisteri Remark:

Get Texas residency quickly to avoid paying state income tax. Even though we don’t agree with your politics, we do believe that you are the best judge of how to spend your money.

LSP Response:

You can thank a Democratic Legislature in 1993 for advancing the Constitutional Amendment prohibiting a state income tax in Texas. However, you should be prepared for your other taxes to be squandered by Governor Perry through the Texas Enterprise Fund and other Perry crony corporate tax giveaways. Also, keep in mind that Republican leaders in Texas regularly divert your tax dollars from intended uses like highway construction and public park management to cover-up their failure to adopt honestly balanced budgets.

Munisteri Remark:

When offered a tamale, you need to remove the corn hus before eating the delicious meat wrapped inside.

LSP Response:

That would be “husk” and not “hus”. Nevertheless, Texas Republicans are experts on bologna.

Munisteri Remark:

Be sure to visit with some of the world’s smartest engineers at NASA. Their space exploration efforts have resulted in fantastic scientific discoveries and many useful inventions, including healthier baby food, advancements in breast cancer diagnoses and farther flying golf balls…

LSP Response: Don’t think for a second that Texas Republican leaders care much about nutrition for babies or women’s health or even taxpayers generally. Perry and Texas Republicans refuse to participate in Medicaid expansion, which would save Texans billions and provide coverage for millions. The only benefactor of Perry are the other states he’s forcing Texans to subsidize. Meanwhile Perry and Republican leaders denied hundreds of thousands of Texas women access to basic health services including mammograms and other cancer screening. Golf – yeah, they care about that.

Munisteri Remark:

…Maybe when you’re done you can call Ohio and recommend they send their retired space shuttle to Texas, where it belongs.

LSP Response:

The NASA facility in Texas – it’s called the Johnson Space Center – as in Lyndon Baines Johnson. You may remember him as the Texas Democratic President who championed and won enactment of the US Voting Rights Act, the same legislation that Texas Republicans are attacking in the US Supreme Court.

Munisteri Remark:

Don’t sit cross legged while wearing spurs.

LSP Response:

Clearly a warning given from experience. Perhaps that explains Rick Perry’s uncomfortable shuffling in the Presidential debates and the real reason for his “oops” moment.

Munisteri Remark:

Texas Republicans have elected more minorities to statewide office in the past 19 years than Democrats did after controlling the state over 100 years. The list includes Al Gonzales, David Medina, Eva Guzman, Wallace Jefferson and Dale Wainwright to the Texas Supreme Court, Elsa Alcala to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Victor Carillo and Michael Williams to the Texas Railroad Commission. And, Texas’ first U.S. Senator of Hispanic descent, Ted Cruz.

LSP Response:

Texas Republicans simply do not accept or understand that it is the ethnicity of voters that reflects minority preference and not the ethnicity of the candidates. None of the Republican elected officials listed by Munisteri have ever received more than 35 percent of the Latino vote in a General Election or more than 15 percent of the African American vote. These Republicans were elected to office by the same Anglo Republicans that elected Rick Perry, John Cornyn, Greg Abbott and other Anglo Republican candidates.
