North Texas Assault Case Mirrors Anti-Abbott Ad

A story aired last night by WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas contains details frighteningly similar to the facts laid out in a political ad released yesterday by the Wendy Davis campaign. The ad centers on a lawsuit in which Greg Abbott aligned himself with a corporation against a woman who had been brutally raped in her own home.

WFAA reported that a North Texas family is suing DirecTV after their 12-year old daughter was assaulted by a registered sex offender who’d accompanied a DirecTV serviceman to their home. DirecTV is denying any responsibility, claiming that the serviceman was actually working for a company DirecTV contracted with to provide service.

The new DirecTV case reinforces the charges made in the anti-Abbott TV ad launched yesterday.

The ad details how, in 1998, then-Texas Supreme Court Justice Greg Abbott, sided with the Kirby Vacuum cleaner company rather than a rape victim. The woman and her family had sued Kirby after a door-to-door salesman brutally raped the woman in her own home – while her children slept in the next room.

Had Kirby required a background check, the company would have found that their new salesman was a known danger – and had recently been released on parole after being charged for indecency with a child. Writing for the minority – in support of Kirby and against the rape victim – Greg Abbott said the company had “no duty” to require a background check on the man.

Thank goodness Abbott was voted down by the other Supreme Court justices. If Abbott’s opinion had prevailed in the Kirby case, the victims in the DirecTV case would have no chance of seeking justice in court.

It’s not often that a political ad so directly reflects today’s headlines. This ad does that – and something more – it exposes Greg Abbott’s loyalty TO insiders and his indifference to Texans victimized BY insiders.
