Texas Republicans Resort to Race Baiting

It will work - unless we help Joel Redmond respond

Many who saw the despicable “Blackbird” mailing sent to voters in Houston area Texas House District 144, were outraged and offended. The mailing is blatantly racist – an inexcusable expression of hate and fear designed to smear a Democratic candidate and separate a growing community along racial lines. It places an Anglo candidate amidst a group of minority elected officials with the clear indication that he is “one of them” and NOT “one of us.”

Online comments began with outrage but then shifted to a tone of “surely they will pay a price for this.”

Actually, “they” may not.

Republicans learned long ago that by launching racially charged attacks against Democratic opponents late in a campaign, the Democrat won’t have the time or resources to respond. Unlike many smaller states where House legislative seats contain 50,000 people or less, Texas legislative districts are large, with populations over 150,000, so campaigns are very expensive.

The candidate targeted in the Blackbird mailing is Democrat Joel Redmond. Redmond is on the verge of winning a State House District that has been held by Republicans for many years. Redmond wins by building a coalition of working class voters of different backgrounds and ethnicities. The Republicans are now desperately trying to hold the seat by breaking up this coalition along racial lines – thus the outrageous “Blackbird” strategy.

Help Joel Redmond fight back and end “Blackbird” Republican race baiting efforts in Texas. Unless attacks like the one against Joel Redmond are quickly met with actions instead of just outrage, they will continue to be launched and continue to work.
