So naturally, Texas Republican leaders in Austin and in Washington are diligently and forcefully supporting a nonpartisan investigation to determine the damage done to our security and to the integrity of our elections, right?
Texas Republicans – from Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz along with the Texas GOP congressional delegation in Washington down to Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick and other Austin-based Republican leaders – have mostly hid out, saying little and doing less about Russia engaging in espionage against our country.
It is Texas Democrats who are stepping into the leadership vacuum to fight back and protect U.S. security and the integrity of our democracy.
Today State Rep. and Democratic Caucus Chair, Chris Turner (HD 101- Arlington/Grand Prairie), filed a resolution in the Texas State House of Representatives calling on the United States Congress to bar new U.S. investments in Russia until a complete and thorough investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 US election has been completed. If passed, the resolution would compel the Texas Secretary of State to alert the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the US House and the Texas congressional delegation of the resolution and request the resolution be entered into the Congressional Record.
Texas Republicans should emerge from hiding
HCR 128 is the first concrete step a lawmaker in the Texas Capitol has taken to push back against Russian aggression and interference in the United States elections. Turner’s resolution sends a strong message that the state of Texas is committed to free and fair elections and remains loyal to the democratic values our nation was founded upon.
Statement from Lone Star Project Director Matt Angle:
“So far, the Texas Republican allegiance to Donald Trump and their fear of his Twitter finger has overcome any concerns about U.S. national security. Senators Cornyn and Cruz are keeping their heads down and their backsides low. Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick and Texas GOP Legislators have also made it clear that their loyalty to the Trump agenda is a higher priority than demanding the truth about Russian intervention in our elections or holding Russia accountable for their attack on American democracy.”
