U.S Supreme Court to Review Texas Redistricting Decision

Court review is latest expression of Greg Abbott and Texas Republican Hostility to Minority Texans
Lone Star Project Director Matt Angle released the following statement:

“Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Ken Paxton and other top Texas Republican officials live in cold sweat fear of Texas voting strength being truly reflected in Texas elections.  They will pull every string and twist every knob to undermine minority voting strength in Texas.

“Today’s announcement that the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the Texas redistricting case means Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans will continue spending millions of Texas taxpayer dollars against Texas citizens.  Lower courts have ruled time and again that Abbott and Texas legislative leaders intentionally discriminated against Latino and African American citizens when drawing congressional and State House boundaries.  Their racially gerrymandered maps have left Texans with districts that suppress minority voting strength and fail to accurately reflect the political views Texans regardless of race.

“Abbott and other Texas leaders should be careful what they ask for.  Every previous court reviewing the Texas case has ruled that the boundaries are racially discriminatory in violation of the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution.  A full and fair review by the Supreme Court may not only confirm racial discrimination but could ultimately lead to the overt partisan gerrymandering apparent in the maps being corrected.”
