Background
Last week, Congressional District 33 candidate Domingo Garcia reinforced concerns that he will be a divisive, and potentially destructive, voice if elected to Congress.
First, Garcia attacked three of the largest companies in North Texas who cumulatively employ over 40,000 workers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, thousands of them members of organized labor. Garcia’s lack of knowledge about local employers and his disregard for auto, aerospace and transportation jobs create legitimate doubt about his ability to represent a diverse working class district.
Second, Garcia lashed outat rival candidate Marc Veasey – an African American man – calling him an “errand boy.” The use of the term “boy” in reference to an African American man rekindles the worst memories of racial devision and shocked many in the community. Local Hispanic leader, State Representative Rafael Anchia, immediately criticized Garcia for the racial slur and called on him to apologize.
So far, rather than apologize, Garcia has gone silent, likely hoping his gaffes will blow over. However, the weekend television coverage keeps his erratic behavior in the news and on voters’ minds.
