Wendy Unites Texans
- Wendy Davis unites Texas voters, bringing them together as a modern coalition in a way that defies the polarizing, hyper-partisan, well-heeled insider approach that has kept Rick Perry, Greg Abbott and other Austin-centric state leaders in power.
- Wendy’s broad appeal centers on her courage to stand up to the abuse of power in Austin combined with her compelling personal story – and both are reinforced by a mainstream record emphasizing strong schools, economic responsibility and a willingness to take risks and use political capital to protect middle-class families.
- Over the past several months, non-partisan, and even some fair-minded Republicans, have reached out to the Lone Star Project to find out how they can help and work with Wendy Davis.
SD10 mirrors Texas racially and politically
- Wendy won and holds highly competitive Texas State Senate District 10, which was safe for Republicans until Wendy’s election in 2008.
- The district can fairly be described as a microcosm of Texas. It is diverse both racially and politically with a large population of Latino and African American citizens, but a plurality of Anglo voters.
- The type coalition Wendy has built in District 10 made up of Democrats, independents and fair-minded Republicans of all ethnicities is precisely the type coalition that can, and must, be built for a Democrat to win statewide in Texas.
Wendy is Battle-tested
- No other Texas elected official over the last three election cycles has confronted and defeated more partisan or relentlessly personal attacks than Wendy Davis.
- In 2008, she defied pundits and political observers by taking on and defeating an entrenched Republican incumbent.
- In 2011, when her district was dismantled as part of a partisan and intentionally discriminatory redistricting effort led by Greg Abbott, she fought back in federal court and won, forcing Abbott to restore her district.
- In her 2012 re-election battle, Wendy was the top target of the Texas GOP and Austin-based special interests. Rick Perry, Greg Abbott and nearly every other statewide Republican leader personally campaigned against her. Millions of dollars were spent on political advertising to defeat her. Wendy did more than weather the political storm, she fought back smartly and relentlessly, forming and mobilizing a broad coalition to win in a district that President Obama lost badly.
Wendy believes in grassroots organizing
- Recent failed Democratic statewide efforts have been timid, insular and unable to invest in the type of technology and expertise required to identify and mobilize a diverse Democratic coalition.
- We can expect the Davis campaign to build and improve upon the outstanding grassroots campaign she ran in her Senate race.
- The presence of Battleground Texas brings experienced and talented man and woman power that establishes the first true statewide statewide Democratic organizing effort in more than a decade.
Texans have good reason to reject Greg Abbott
- Greg Abbott is part of the Austin-based crony coalition of political insiders and ideologues who have propped up Rick Perry and kept Texas voters divided against each other.
- Abbott has used his position as Attorney General to shield and protect special interests tied to his key funders, while spending millions of taxpayer dollars on politically motivated lawsuits.
- Greg Abbott has aligned himself against state school children and their families by defending a school funding system ruled to be unconstitutional by the state courts.
- Abbott is overtly hostile to Latino and African American voters. Abbott was the key advisor to Republican state leaders urging them to adopt redistricting plans that intentionally discriminate against minority Texas citizens. He combined federal grant money with state funds to harass and falsely prosecute minority senior citizens who help their neighbors vote.
