Our Gift to Pete Sessions

This morning the Dallas Morning News reported that Congressman Pete Sessions (CD32 – Dallas) is having trouble with basic math – in this case, simple division.

While speaking on the House floor yesterday, Sessions claimed that the Affordable Care Act costs $5 million per each newly covered American. If accurate, that would be a large cost indeed. But Sessions got it wrong – way wrong.

To help Sessions – and his frustrated (or embarrassed) staff, we’ve sent him a set of division flashcards so he can brush up on remedial math. The set is suitable for ages 9 and older, so they should work for Congressman Sessions.

Here’s what Sessions said:

“If you just do simple multiplication, 12 million into $108 billion, we’re talking literally every single recipient would be costing this government more than $5 million per person for their insurance…”

Forget for a minute that Sessions was using multiplication when he should have used division. As the Dallas Morning News pointed out – $108 divided by 12 million is $9,000 – not the $5 million Sessions claimed.
