Last week, the CIA confirmed that not only did the Russian government intervene in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections to assist Donald Trump, but Russian President Vladimir Putin was personally involved in the effort to help Trump.
Prominent Republican Senators including Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Senator John McCain of Arizona have joined with Democrats to call for a non-partisan investigation into Russian involvement in the US elections. However, Texas Republican leaders have been silent, refusing to talk about, much less demand, investigation into a hostile a foreign government intervening in our Presidential election.
LSP Director Matt Angle issued the following statement calling on Texas officials including Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton to call on Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz to publicly condemn Russian intervention in our election on behalf of Donald Trump and to formally request a bi-partisan investigation of this breach in U.S. Security:
“In matters of national security, Republicans and Democrats must be united to keep our country safe. It’s now confirmed that Russia hacked into the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign to help Donald Trump. Taking action now to prevent further damage to our security is not about partisan politics, it’s about protecting our democracy.
“Greg Abbott and other Republican officials regularly use fears over phony election integrity issues to promote themselves. Now, in the face of actual political espionage conducted by a foreign government, Abbott is ducking for cover and hiding in silence.
“Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, and Ken Paxton need to find the courage to rise above their partisan fears, put politics aside, and call on the Texas leaders in Washington to join together in demanding a full investigation of foreign involvement in our elections.”
