Today’s the deadline for Trump to pay up. Just two days before Donald Trump will be sworn in as President, Trump will be required to set aside tens of millions of dollars to repay people ripped off by his infamous Trump University scam as ordered by a federal judge last month.
But not all the men and women scammed by Trump’s phony real estate school will see justice or get their money back. Texans swindled by Trump are staying swindled.
Why?
As Texas Attorney General, Greg Abbott betrayed Texas victims and protected Donald Trump from civil liability just as Texas investigators were closing in on him.
Here’s what happened:
Donald Trump ripped off Texans
Last summer, news reports detailed how then Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office shielded Donald Trump from a state lawsuit demanding over $5 million in settlement payments for ripped off Texans. However, instead of the suit being filed, they let Trump off the hook by simply agreeing to stop operating in Texas.
According to an attorney in the AG’s consumer protection division, the case against Trump “was closed and all the Texas consumers were left high and dry.” The reason, according to the same attorney, was simple: politics. Instead of Texans getting their money back after being swindled, Trump University got a sweetheart deal and was allowed to quietly leave the state without penalty.
Abbott’s special treatment for special friends
Texans swindled by Trump may have been left empty-handed, but not Greg Abbott. After the suit against Trump University was shut down, Donald Trump contributed $35,000 to Greg Abbott’s campaign for Governor. In addition, Abbott was allowed to list Donald Trump on fundraising invitations as an “Advocate” to impress and lure other donors.
Statement from Lone Star Project Director Matt Angle:
“If you see Donald Trump giving Greg Abbott a nod and a wink during the inaugural ceremonies, it won’t be for any help during the campaign. It will be thanks for betraying the Texans who Abbott let Trump swindle with his phony real estate school.
“It may be crooked, but it’s not complicated. Texans got ripped off, and Abbott got paid off.”
