“The notion that sensible or even fair-minded Republicans still wield power in Washington, DC or in Texas is nostalgia.
The removal of Kevin McCarthy as US House Speaker today by the most extreme and divisive elements within the Republican Party follows on the heels of Republicans in Texas retaining criminal Ken Paxton as our state’s Attorney General. The Republican Party has now been fully turned over to ideologues and charlatans. Wishing for so-called traditional Republicans to reassert influence and regain control is a waste of time and a disservice to the public.
The Democratic Party, in Texas and nationally, retains a sensible center of gravity that believes in democracy and American ideals. We have not just an opportunity but an important responsibility to make sure voters know that in the fall, like it or not, retaining American democracy may depend on something as obvious and straightforward as Democrats beating Republicans.”
