The craven efforts currently underway by Governor Greg Abbott and AG Ken Paxton in Austin and MAGA County Judge Tim O’Hare in Tarrant County are being appropriately called out by conscientious voters and responsible media.
However, many activists, newer members of the press, and even some recently elected officeholders don’t know that this type of overt voter intimidation and suppression is not new. In fact, it is a go-to play that Greg Abbott and other Texas Republicans have run for over 20 years.
Their fears of an expanded electorate within a diverse Texas are expressed by attacks on voting itself. Rather than expend an ounce of political capital to earn support from voters outside their destructive MAGA world, they attack the rights and the ability of Texans to cast their votes and have them counted fairly.
