Abbott’s Identity Crisis

Greg Abbott hasn't agreed to any debates, but he's already engaged in a heated back-and-forth, with himself. From one appearance to another, one brochure to another, and sometimes on the same day, Greg Abbott lurches from a Tea Party toady to a soft-in-the-middle milquetoast.
Greg Abbott hasn’t agreed to any debates, but he’s already engaged in a heated back-and-forth, with himself.  From one appearance to another, one brochure to another, and sometimes on the same day, Greg Abbott lurches from a Tea Party toady to a soft-in-the-middle milquetoast.

Flip Flop Flyer

When Greg Abbott is appearing before what his handlers consider partisan ideological groups, he breaks out his “Hot Head Greg flyer“.  The language in the brochure is classic Tea Party rhetoric, designed to divide Texans against each other. It leads with the headline “A Conservative on Our Side” and features a scowling photo of Abbott.

When Abbott appears before groups his handlers consider more even tempered and discerning, he tones down the rhetoric considerably.  The words “conservative” or “Obama” don’t appear on the revised flyer. The photo of scowling Greg is replaced with grinning Greg.

Hot and Cold

On substantive issues, Greg Abbott wants to have it both ways – serving up red meat today, switching to vanilla pudding tomorrow – when it serves his immediate political interests.
