SD10 candidate Mark Shelton bungles opening TV ads

As the press release from Senate District 10 incumbent Senator Wendy Davis below explains, the Davis campaign just moments ago released and rebutted three attack ads to be produced and aired by her Republican opponent Mark Shelton BEFORE THE ADS GO ON THE AIR.

That’s right. The Shelton campaign allowed their attack ads to be acquired by the Davis campaign and exposed and rebutted as patently untrue and unfair before a single commercial has been viewed by the public.

Davis Campaign Releases Scripts to
Opponent’s Secret Attack Ads

FORT WORTH, TX – Today, Senator Wendy Davis’ campaign responded to false accusations made in campaign commercial scripts written for the Mark Shelton campaign. Each ad, all of which have yet to be released by the Shelton campaign, is laced with patently false information and exposes the Shelton’s intent to use false, harshly negative attacks to misinform and disillusion voters.

Davis expressed concern and disappointment in Shelton’s decision to conduct a dishonest campaign.

“I believe voters deserve an honest debate about the real issues facing Texas families – quality public education, job creation, and government transparency,” said Davis. “My opponent obviously disagrees.”

The ads reveal Shelton’s strategy to depict misleading scenes and to state overtly false claims.

In one script, a voice accuses Davis of violating state ethics laws falsely identifying Senator Davis herself as a lobbyist. A simple search of Texas Ethics Commission records, which are available online, proves the accusation untrue.

In another script, a voice says Davis voted against balanced budgets and for higher taxes. In fact, Davis voted against the unbalanced budget that Gov. Rick Perry and Mark Shelton forced onto Texas families. The Perry-Shelton budget did not balance but instead underfunded Medicaid by $4.8 billion and diverted nearly $5.0 billion from so-called “dedicated funds,” which are fees and other taxes collected for specific purposes, such as funding transportation projects, Parks and Wildlife, and medical trauma centers, to the general fund in order to make the budget “balance.” All of this came on top of slashing $5.4 billion from public education.

“I voted against Perry’s budget because he used gimmicks and accounting games to hide a funding shortfall, and because it badly harmed public schools here in Tarrant County and across Texas,” said Davis. “Kids are sitting in over-crowded classrooms today, and some of them were forced to pay to ride the bus this morning because Mark Shelton and others like him weren’t strong enough to say no to Rick Perry. Mark Shelton may be afraid to stand up to Rick Perry, but I’m not.”

Davis campaign spokesperson Zachariah Evans explained that the Shelton campaign released the scripts to a third party, which were then forwarded to the Davis campaign.
