Statement on Voter ID

Today the Supreme Court of the United States rejected Ken Paxton’s appeal in the voter ID case, Lone Star Project Director Matt Angle released the following statement:

“The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to reject efforts by Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton to protect the overtly discriminatory Texas Voter ID law is no surprise.  The Abbott/Paxton voter ID law is an assault on basic voting rights and freedoms. Every federal court that has reviewed the law has ruled it to be discriminatory.

“But make no mistake, the fight is not over. Immediately after he was sworn in as President, Donald Trump’s Justice Department signaled that it will likely weigh in on the side of discrimination and suppression during lower court proceedings in the case.

“Despite the Trump alliance with Abbott and Paxton, the evidence of intentional discrimination already presented to the court is overwhelming. We are confident that District Court Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos will consider the evidence carefully, reconfirm intentional discrimination, and take action to enforce the law and protect Texas voters.

“A special thanks is due to Congressman Marc Veasey and the other plaintiffs who had the courage to stand up to overt discrimination and the tenacity to continue the fight.”
