Column: Texas House Democrats Fight Hard & Smart

When Texas State House Democrats bring their fight for democracy back home, they will be welcomed as heroes and warriors, and they should be – not just by Democrats but by anyone who admires courage, principle, and patriotism.

The Texas Democrats’ move to break a quorum and freeze legislative action on Donald Trump’s racist plan to rig the 2026 elections was never about blocking the ultimate adoption of the map. Their plan was smarter and more strategic.

They knew that Greg Abbott, along with every other statewide Republican and every Republican legislator, would never find the courage to say “no” to an order from Trump. Abbott and the others weakly took the knee in unison. They backed a racist map drawn by Washington political operatives. It packs and shreds minority neighborhoods to create five Trump-favored districts Republicans didn’t earn and don’t deserve.

The Texas Republican surrender to Trump was pathetic, complete, and unanimous. Democrats knew that whenever they returned home, Republicans would vote to pass the racist map.

So rather than leave Texas to break quorum on an unrealistic mission to kill the map, they led a battle charge to birth a national movement against a racist and dangerous power grab. It is a vanguard attack by leaders who have become our first defenders of democracy. Republicans know this, and it is why they are so angry. The Democrats outmaneuvered them.

They charged into Illinois and sounded the alarm. Trump’s plan may have started in Texas, but it was intended for and aimed at the entire country. He doesn’t just want five more Texas seats; he wants to rig elections so that he won’t ever lose and so that democracy can’t win.

Texas House Democrats shrugged off threats of arrest and efforts to vacate their seats to spread the word and raise the threat level. California heard and answered the call. Governor Newsom has announced that Californians will vote on a  new congressional map that matches and offsets Trump’s Texas power grab. And California is likely just the first state to respond.

So now the Texas House Democrats are coming home – not to concede but to engage in legislative combat. They return with new allies and even more credibility to pull back the covers on the most racially discriminatory congressional plan in the country. They will build a legal record to expose blatant violations of the Voting Rights Act and a level of intentional racial discrimination that may even exceed the days of Jim Crow.

Just weeks ago, when Donald Trump first ordered Texas Republican leaders to give him five more seats, no one doubted that Abbott and other Republicans would comply. Their submission to Trump is not just complete, it is expected.

And no one was surprised that Democrats would object and resist to the point of breaking a legislative quorum. It’s happened several times now and while they’ve long been outnumbered, Democrats have never been outmatched in courage or resolve.

What is different and most notable this time is that Texas House Democrats not only fought hard, but they also fought smart. They found a broader mission and a higher cause. They inspired and brought both strategy and structure to Democratic resistance that simply did not exist until they made their courageous stand.
